Description

This was done for cards game contest. I've lost :) Anyway I kinda knew that I'm going to loose from the beginning - so I'm ok with that - it was just experimental piece for me and I've learn a lot during the contest from another artists :)
You can see that my mistaken approach has ruined the whole piece - instead of learning deer anatomy and it's way to move - I've just used the photo-reference -and the result - the deer looks like a heavy cow falling from it's weight.. I worked a lot on this though..And there are some parts at this painting that I like.. Tell me what you think :)

How can you expect to get honest feedback when you tell us what you think is wrong? Had you not said anything about the deer I wouldn't have given it a second thought. This is fantasy art, anything goes. I think there's too much green, but maybe that's what the character is about. Woman's neck looks too long, left forearm appears bigger than the right, and the various harness rings seem too thick and big, and the harness straps seem too wide. I'm not a saddle person but the logical part of me can't understand all that harness gear on the back end of the deer. If the wind is blowing then it seems all the grass should be blurry.

Overall the composition is well thought out. The lighting is mysterious and good. The piece has a nice mood. The deer should be big because it must carry an amazon like woman who is weighed down with a big knife and spear, and the animal must bear the weight of a the heavy looking harness and armor.

Nice colors!
I find the deer a little rigid and lacking depth.

Nice one. I like the green. I think the sky could have used a bit more work though.

twistoflime,
thank you for your crits :) I just want to alarm people of not doing the mistakes like mine and plan the work carefully - the photoreference shouldn't affect the atmosphere of the piece - or it is wrong reference.. I agree with you about everything, but I think that deer can be big and look light ;)

I like the energy of this piece, the colors and luminescence. So your deer is a bit on the muscular and heavy side. It's a fantasy piece. Your deer can look however you'd like it to.

Good work!

I love the colors. and the composition is well chosen. I'm not sure: is her face too small?
the animal is very beautiful and the girl as well. Good work.

good work! i like the composition and how you did the deer. i think the girl looks a bit too stiff though. i do appreciate the style, the small head doesn't bother me so much, but i'd like to see more expression in her pose, right now it looks quite rigid and unsure. the colors work fine, i think, the trees in the background are amazing :)
